The Anaheim Police Department is seeking highly motivated and experienced public safety dispatchers for the positions of Dispatcher II and Senior Police Dispatcher.
Qualified applicants must possess journey level experience of public safety dispatching. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to type 50 net words per minute (WPM). Possession of a valid California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate is required.

Must be available to work any assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays.

The department has sole discretion to hire at the Police Dispatcher II or Senior Police Dispatcher level based on experience and available vacancies.
*POLICE DISPATCHER II HIRING INCENTIVE:

Newly hired Police Dispatcher II's would be eligible for an incremental $10,000 incentive payment. The payment will be received in two installments:
  • The first installment of $5,000 will be paid the first full pay period following the first date of employment.
  • The second installment of $5,000 will be paid after the first full pay period following successful completion of probation.
Requirements:
  • Candidates must have a minimum of three (3) years of prior experience performing public safety dispatching duties and using computer-aided dispatch equipment prior to their date of hire with the City of Anaheim to qualify for the hiring incentive.
  • The hiring incentive for Police Dispatchers II shall only apply to those candidates who have submitted and application during the approved program dates (April 22, 2025 - June 30, 2026).
  • The incentive is not pensionable income and subject to amounts payable under federal, state, and local taxes as may be required to be withheld pursuant to any applicable law or regulation.

Qualifications
Dispatcher II
Experience: Journey-level experience operating communications equipment or equivalent public contact work, preferably involving emergency situations or police related services.
Knowledge of: English usage and spelling; record keeping methods; principles of human relations; and appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

Ability to: Act quickly in an emergency and adopt an effective course of action; work under stress, dealing with emergency situations; speak clearly and concisely; listen to and record information clearly and accurately; remember numerous details; read, understand and apply moderately difficult materials; receive confident information and maintain confidentiality; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
License/Certification Required: Possession of a valid California Driver's License by date of appointment. Police Dispatcher II requires possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Peace Officer's Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate by date of appointment.

Senior Police Dispatcher


Experience: Effectively performing responsible journey level law enforcement dispatching. (Combination of experience as a radio dispatcher and a telephone complaint worker in a law enforcement environment is acceptable). Experience in Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and enhanced 9-1-1.

Knowledge of: Police dispatching procedures; response procedures; work flow techniques; record keeping methods; computer aided dispatch system equipment; relevant state codes and municipal ordinances; basic principles of supervision and training.


Ability to: Adapt to new technologies as they become available; maintain accurate files and records; read, understand and apply difficult material. Effectively train and evaluate employee performance, write effective training policies and procedures. Understand pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without immediate supervision; speak clearly and distinctly; communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing; prepare clear, concise and easily understood narrative and statistical reports. Receive confidential information and maintain confidentiality; compose memos and office procedures; perform the full range of police dispatcher duties; act in the capacity of supervisor as assigned. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; provide leadership in carrying out police activities; coordinate the effort, when more than one employee is involved, in the assignment of duties; provide command to members of the Bureau as necessary in the absence of bureau command or ranking supervisors; motivate personnel to work together as a team.
License/Certification Required: Possession of a valid California Driver's License by date of appointment. Requires possession of a valid Peace Officer's Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate by date of appointment.
NOTE: Must be available to work assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Environmental Conditions: Exposure to high frequency noise.
Employees of the Anaheim Police Department must be permanent and fulltime residents of the State of California and live within a one hundred (100) mile radius of the City of Anaheim.
Physical Conditions: Work is performed in an office environment utilizing modern office equipment and technology and may require sitting for prolonged periods of time using a computer. The incumbent stands, walks, and may twist, reach, bend, crouch and kneel. An incumbent must be able to meet the requirements of the classification and have mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

Anaheim Police Department Blueprint - knowledge of the Anaheim Police Department Blueprint is required of all Police Department employees.
Further selection steps include, but are not limited to a background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, a medical examination, which includes drug/alcohol screening, and an interview with the Chief of Police. The interview with the background investigator and completion of the background investigation will include, but is not limited to, verification and evaluation of any present and/or past use of drugs, driving and employment history.
